Referrer Tags

Referrer Tags

On the “Add Site” or “Edit Site” page, the following option appears: “Enable Referrer Tags”.

If you enable the generic tags extraction, the referrer will detect the different zones.

This offers the possibility of pasting the same tag in all the site’s zones, for example, in the position “Header468”. The tag reads the Referrer header and, using it as the starting point, it defines which zone it is requesting.

This setup can be applied to each Site administered in the account, and it avoids operating with different tags during the implementation process.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This option is only available for Site or Network type accounts.

In order to start using Referrer Tags, you should follow some steps:

1) Add or edit the Site to enable the tags.

2) Define the Positions to be used (for example: Header, Left1, Left2, Middle, Right, etc.).

The positions are the advertising spaces used throughout the entire site. However, these are defined in a generic manner, i.e. they are not associated to any zone. The following are some position examples:

- Header (728x90 / Above the fold)
- Right1 (Variable / Below the fold)
- Layer (Invisible / Above the fold)
- Box (300x250 / Below the fold / Link on a new window)

The positions are enabled in the Site’s view. To add new ones, you should click on the “Add position” button:

Please specify the following:
- Site to which it belongs.
- Name (it cannot contain spaces).
- Size: It could be “Variable” (it has a recommended height and width), “Invisible”, or “Fixed” (with a specific height and width).
- Position on the screen:

  • Unknown

  • Above the fold - visible without scroll

  • It can be immediately visible or not, depending on the screen size and resolution

  • Below the fold - high probability that the ad appears off-screen

- Checkbox to specify whether the clicked link should open on the same window or on a new one.

The positions are obligatory in order to be able to generate Referrer Tags.
When using the Auto Creation of Spaces feature, you should define the size of each space to be created in the positions.

3) Create Zones
You should create zones under the specific Site.
In this case, you must set up a “default” Zone --in order to be able to activate the Referrer Tags.

There can only be one default zone per site.

For the other Zones, you can add “patterns” that are expected to be taken from the referrer header. The pattern can include asterisks (*).
You should enter one expression per line:

Patterns can have a maximum of 100 characters. In addition, you can specify up to 10 patterns per zone.

For example:
http://www.yahoo.com/search?q=pizza

Pattern 1> */search?*
matches the referrer that appears before. However,
Pattern 2> */search
does not, because it does not match what follows.

If you would like to “exclude” a pattern, you should add a minus (-) sign before it:

If no zone pattern matches, it will match the default zone.

4) Create Spaces
You can add them manually or you can choose to activate the auto creation feature from the Site. For this case, it is advisable to use the latter.

5) Obtain and Implement the HTML Code (Referrer Tag)
On the Site page, click on the “HTML Code” button:

Code View:

The tag should be implemented as soon as the body tag opens, and it should be pasted on all the site’s pages (assuming the home and inner pages have the same positions).
If not all the positions are to be included in one or more pages, you will be able to remove them directly from the list before selecting the tag:

How Does It Work?

When receiving a request that combines the referrer patterns of each zone with the position, the system will search for the matching space.
If no matches are found, it will take the default zone as a match.
If the Auto Creation feature is activated, the space will be created in the matching zone.
The received tag contains the site’s ID and the position name by means of which the parameters needed for its creation are defined.
E.g.: If a position is called Header, the “Header Space” is going to be created in the corresponding zone, with the same position data (size, name, click behavior).
